Adventure · Watch Fuego erupt from your tent

Climb to a private high camp on Volcán Acatenango and spend the night watching neighbouring Fuego throw lava into the dark. The hardest thing we offer, and the one guests talk about for years.

Volcán de Fuego erupting at night seen from Acatenango

The experience

Acatenango rises to 3,976 m just south-west of Antigua, and it sits shoulder to shoulder with Volcán de Fuego, one of the most active volcanoes in the Americas. From a camp at around 3,600 m you look straight across at Fuego's crater. On a clear night it erupts every 15 to 20 minutes or so, with rumbles you feel in your chest and glowing lava running down its flanks.

We run this hike privately with a certified mountain guide and porter. You climb at your own pace through farmland, cloud forest and pine, then across open volcanic scree. Your camp has proper tents, insulated sleeping bags and a hot dinner already waiting. In the small hours you can push for the summit to watch the sun rise over Agua, Pacaya and, on the best mornings, Lake Atitlán.

Your specialist chooses the day using the latest weather and volcanic activity reports. They also plan a gentle acclimatisation day in Antigua beforehand and a soft landing afterwards, ideally a hot shower, a massage and a very good lunch.

What's included

  • Private certified mountain guide and porter for your group
  • Private return transfer from your Antigua hotel to the trailhead
  • Reserved camp with weatherproof tents, mats and cold-rated sleeping bags
  • Dinner, breakfast, snacks, hot drinks and drinking water on the mountain
  • Warm-layer, poncho and trekking-pole loan as needed
  • National park entrance and community trail fees
  • Optional dawn summit push with your guide

Good to know

  • Expect around 5–6 hours of steep climbing on day one and roughly 1,600 m of ascent, so a good base fitness level matters.
  • Temperatures at camp often drop close to freezing, even in the dry season. We provide the heavy layers; bring a warm hat and gloves.
  • We suggest at least one night in Antigua (1,530 m) beforehand to help with altitude.
  • Fuego's activity varies, and on cloudy nights the view can come and go. That is part of mountain travel.
