Culture · Three volcanoes, a private boat, Maya villages
Cross what Aldous Huxley called the most beautiful lake in the world by private boat, stopping at Maya villages that each have their own language, craft and character.
The experience
Lake Atitlán fills an ancient volcanic caldera ringed by the volcanoes San Pedro, Tolimán and Atitlán. Around its shores sit a dozen towns, most of them Tz'utujil or Kaqchikel Maya, and each one feels distinct. The best way to see them is by water, on your own schedule.
With a private lancha and a local guide, you might start in San Juan La Laguna among its cooperatives of natural-dye weavers and painters. Then cross to Santiago Atitlán to visit Maximón, the cigar-smoking folk saint whose home moves to a new family's house each year. You can finish in hillside Santa Cruz, or with a swim off a quiet dock.
We start early, while the water is glassy. The afternoon wind, known locally as the Xocomil, can make crossings bumpy, so your guide times the route around it and builds in long, unhurried lunch stops.

Good to know
- Mornings are calmest on the water. Most crossings finish by early afternoon.
- Photography of people, and especially inside Maximón's house, should always be asked first. Your guide will help.
- Lake towns are steep. Comfortable shoes beat sandals.
- Carry some small quetzal notes for craft purchases in smaller villages.
