Culture · Dawn over the Maya temples

Enter Tikal before the day crowds and climb above the canopy as howler monkeys wake the forest and the great temples rise out of the mist.

Tikal temple rising from the rainforest

The experience

Tikal was one of the great cities of the Classic Maya world, at its height between roughly AD 200 and 900. Today it lies within a vast protected rainforest in northern Petén, a UNESCO World Heritage Site for both its ruins and its wildlife. Thousands of structures sit beneath the trees, and only a fraction have been excavated.

We enter on the early sunrise permit and walk by headlamp to Temple IV, the tallest structure on the site at about 65 m. From its top platform you watch the canopy appear out of the dark, with the roof combs of Temples I, II and III breaking through the mist. Howler monkeys roar, toucans and parrots start up, and the forest comes alive around you.

Afterwards your archaeologist-trained guide leads you through the Great Plaza, the Lost World complex and quieter corners most visitors miss. You get back to your lodge for a late breakfast and a swim before the heat of the day.

Good to know
