Volcán de Fuego erupting at night seen from Acatenango

Antigua · Camp beside an erupting volcano

An overnight climb to a high camp facing Volcán de Fuego, which often erupts through the night. It is challenging, cold and one of the most spectacular adventures in Central America.

Overview

Acatenango is a dormant twin-peaked volcano rising almost 4,000 metres above the Antigua valley. Its neighbour, Volcán de Fuego, is one of the most active volcanoes in the world, often erupting several times an hour. From a camp on Acatenango's upper slopes, you can watch lava and glowing ash burst into the night sky just across the ridge.

The hike begins near La Soledad at around 2,400 metres and climbs steeply through farmland, cloud forest and pine forest to a camp at roughly 3,600 metres. Most travellers take five to six hours to reach camp. Early the next morning, there is an optional pre-dawn push to the summit for sunrise above a sea of clouds, with Agua, Fuego and distant Atitlán on the horizon.

We work with experienced local guides and a private, well-equipped camp, including warm sleeping bags, proper meals and porters to carry the heavy gear. Your specialist will help you prepare, check that the hike suits your fitness, and plan a comfortable recovery night in Antigua afterwards.

Best months● Rainy season (May–October): mornings usually clear, afternoon showers

November to April offers the clearest skies and the best chance of seeing Fuego erupting at night, though December to February nights can fall below freezing at camp. In the May to October rainy season, afternoon storms and cloud are frequent, trails are muddy and views of Fuego are far less reliable, so we recommend the hike mainly in the dry season.

Practical tips

Acclimatise first
Spend at least two nights in Antigua before the climb to adjust to the altitude. Stay well hydrated throughout.
Dress in layers
Temperatures range from warm at the trailhead to near freezing at camp. Bring thermal base layers, a fleece, a down jacket, hat and gloves.
Hire a porter
The climb is steep and relentless. A porter for your pack makes a huge difference and supports local families.
Wear broken-in boots
The trail is loose volcanic scree in places. Good hiking boots and trekking poles help, especially on the descent.

Acatenango Volcano FAQ

It is challenging. Expect around 1,200 to 1,500 metres of ascent over steep, loose terrain at altitude. You don't need to be an athlete, but good fitness and some hiking experience are important.
