Nature · Turquoise pools and candlelit caves
Swim in the tiered turquoise pools of Semuc Champey, hike to the lookout above them, and wade by candlelight through a river cave deep in Alta Verapaz.
The experience
In the forested hills near Lanquín, the Río Cahabón disappears under a natural limestone bridge about 300 m long. Above it, a chain of stepped pools fills with calm, jade-and-turquoise water. That is Semuc Champey, a protected natural monument and one of the most photogenic places in Central America.
Your day starts with a steep climb to El Mirador, the lookout where the pools spread out below you. Then you come down for a long, unhurried swim. For the adventurous, your guide leads you into the K'an'ba cave nearby, wading and swimming through the river passage by candlelight. You can also float back down the Cahabón on an inner tube.
Semuc is remote, and that is part of its magic. We arrange a private 4x4 for the final rough stretch of road and pair the day with a stay at a riverside lodge, so you can enjoy the pools early, before the day-trippers arrive.
What's included
- Private bilingual guide for the day
- Private 4x4 transfers from your Lanquín-area lodge
- Semuc Champey park entrance
- Guided K'an'ba cave experience with candles and safety equipment
- River tubing on the Cahabón (optional)
- Picnic or riverside lunch, water and snacks
Good to know
- The climb to the lookout takes about 45 minutes on steep, often muddy steps.
- The cave involves swimming in deep water in the dark. It is optional, and your guide will assess conditions on the day.
- Heavy rain can turn the pools cloudy. The dry months usually bring the clearest water.
- Bring water shoes, a swimsuit and a dry bag.
